Honey for our Souls

“Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24

Right now I’m reading Honey for a Child’s Heart, a book on celebrating the worth of good books and instilling in our children a deep love for reading. It was given to me by a dear friend, who has already raised two stunning, brilliant, thoughtful, godly, and all-out fabulous daughters.

Anyone who has helped Jeff and me move (there are many of you out there because we’ve moved seven times), knows that we have many books. Probably thousands. You’ve probably groaned under their weight. We’ve actually tried to wittle down our collection to only the best, but still we’re bowing book shelves and we still have stacks of boxes out in Dad’s shop. We love books. Jeff always says that his closest friends are dead. He communes with them, learns from them, and experiences life with them, through the words they have left on precious pages. I tool love books. One of the treasures of the early months of mommyhood, when 2am feedings were a regular occurance, was reading novels by the light of a teeny clip-on booklight Jeff gave me. We had to change the batteries twice during those first three months, and I read almost 25 books by the time Dutch was four months old.

So, I’ve devoted a page to listing my favorite books. I’d love feedback, suggestions, or ideas. Perhaps sometimes I’ll review them, or quote them, or just list them. I don’t want to spend too much time here, when I could be reading more . . .

Just finished reading;

The Shack.  Thought provoking. Fascinting depiction of God as Father, Son, Holy Spirit.  Excellent Theodicy.

Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos.  Fabulous!!!  Recommended by my friend Janae.  Great writer–she is what I aspire to be in terms of fiction writing. Definitely a must-read.

Tale of Three Kings.  Short, piercing story about three kings of Israel–addresses the issue of church dissension.  Convicting!

Now Reading:

The Hawk and the Dove:  a trilogy from (surprise) my mother-in-law.  Just started …

Favorites:

1. Pursuit of God

2. Year of Wonders

3. Ella Minnow Pea

4. The Rumpole Series

5. Humility

And . . .

Anything written by:

1. AW Tozer

2. CS Lewis

3. John Piper

4. Warren Wiersbe

5. Andrew Murray

And just for fun . . .

Anything by Rosamund Pilcher

Kari, you love Rosamund Pilcher, too!? How did I not know this? She is one of my very favorites. Shell Seekers and September are a couple of my favorite books. If only I could be like her some day! and P.S. I love the new pages!
