“This painting shows we love you, Mommy!” Heart melting!

Growing up, there was an embroidered picture and poem, hand-sewn by my mom and framed in a simple wooden frame. It hung on the wall of our living room. I can still see it hanging there in my mind’s eye. I read it so often it’s etched in my memory. It now hangs in my kids’ bedroom, just to remind me:

Cleaning and scrubbing will wait ’till tomorrow

Children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow

So quiet down cobwebs! Dust go to sleep!

I’m rocking my baby. Babies don’t keep.

And so today, I’m “rocking” my babies … by throwing housework (and 52 bites!) to the wind and driving to the beach. We haven’t seen the ocean at all this summer, and they will only be 3 and 5 this one time!

I pray no matter what your day looks like, you are able to savor whatever it is that will someday be gone. A child, a parent, a glass of lemonade. However profound or however simple, may you enjoy today for what it is — a gift. Happy Friday; Thanks so much for reading.

  1. Thank you, Kari, for the shared memory and the reminders.
Watch out for sneaker waves. Love you. mom

  2. Amen! Life is so dang busy. I want it to slow down. I want to engage in every moment with Trace, but it’s just so hard to do sometimes. But I want to do a better job at that every day. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. It’s Perfect! I hope you have a perfect day at the beach and enjoy it fully 🙂
This poem sits where I see it daily and am reminded constantly.

  4. Whoo-hoo! Yay for your mom & all her motherly wisdom & yay for a day at the beach—have fun! I was at the store today and an elderly man started talking to the kids. He told me he just welcomed his 39th great-grandchild into the world! Then he started talking about how life goes so fast & kids grow up even faster. His parting words: “You only get one turn. Do it right.” He had me blinking back tears while I was in line & now you are doing the same! It is an attacking the cobwebs day for me, but trying to take breaks and spill love on the kiddos.

  5. Thanks for sharing…I want to put this up in our house! Truly enjoyed a fun filled evening with my kids tonight even doing somersaults! Loved it!
