Alright, guys, I am in major need of some holiday creativity! Just realized that my kids are now at the age where they can take part and really enjoy holiday traditions and I want to establish fun, meaningful activities for us to do together. I actually just found a book by Shirley Dobson and Gloria Gaither (haven’ t heard those names in awhile, huh?) from 1983 called Let’s Make a Memory. It is well-worn and filled with my dear mom’s underlines and notations. I am amazed, inspired, and humbled by how much work my mom went into establishing fun and creative things for us to do growing up. She was (and is) amazing! Yes, the book is 27 years old, but a lot of the ideas are totally doable today!
So, I’d like to post a few, and hopefully actually follow through and do them. But first, for those of you creative and crafty types out there, can you please share with me what holiday traditions you do with your children or family? Please share! I want ideas and I know you have some. Thank you!

I’m trying to make decorations out of cut-outs of my kids hand print every year. We usually do something at Thanksgiving for making Turkeys. I just posted about the Thanksgiving centerpiece we made this week.
My goal is to make a Christmas ornament with their hand print every year. One year we made them with clay that was baked and the kids painted them and I glued on a picture of them. Last year we did foam cut-outs of their hands. This year will probably be something similar but we’re going to decorate them differently. It’s fun to see how much they grow in a year just by this hand print. They make great presents for grandparents too.

I am sooooo not crafty creative. This is about the only time of year that we do anything crafty. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve found!
I’m trying to get started on the tradition thing too–so fun!
1. Read a Christmas story every night during Dec. I don’t have enough Christmas storybooks yet, so I check some out from the library. This year I’m going to wrap them and let them take turns picking one a night.
2. Advent Calendar of course–we open a door each morning. During that time we say a passage from the Christmas story–by the time Christmas comes, it’s amazing how many verses are memorized! Behind the doors is either a small piece of candy or a fun activity for that day–like do a Christmas craft or drive and check out lights, bake cookies, etc.
3. 12 days of coffee–our family picks 12 places to go. Each day is a new adventure and time with each other–sometimes we all share some cocoa and some days we splurge and all get a drink. We snap a photo each day of us and the “number” we are on.

Ooh, thanks guys! These are great ideas. I’m definitely going to do these. Love the different Christmas book from the library, but wrapping them up so it’s a surprise each night. What a great idea, and free! Bless you both!
We like to hide the baby Jesus from the nativity until Christmas morning. We put the shepherds and animals out but Mary, Joseph and the donkey get put far away. They are “traveling” to Bethlehem. Each night we move/hide them for the kids to find them, as they travel around to get to the stable.
Also love having a different Christmas boom to read each day!
Try to keep it simple and sweet. Turn out all the light except the tree lights and candles and sing carols on the couch.
The ones I have so far are boring, I need more ideas. Anyway, we do a christmas chain numbering the days until christmas, starting Dec 1. We don’t do a christmas tree. We couldn’t figure out how to answer the “why” question on that one, so we just don’t. We do do a fancy nativity scene decorated with garland and lights. We decorate christmas cookies. Of course last year was the first year of these traditions.
